How to Install a Chair Base: A Simple 3-Step Guide

Installing the base of an office chair might seem tricky, but it’s actually a quick and easy task you can do yourself in just a few minutes. Whether you’ve received a new ergonomic chair from Medallion Furnitures or are reassembling an old one, follow this 3-step guide to set up your chair like a pro.

✅ What You’ll Need:

  • Chair Base (usually a 5-leg star base with wheels)
  • Hydraulic Gas Lift (cylinder)
  • Plastic or Metal Cover (also called the tower belly or hydraulic sleeve)
  • Chair Seat Assembly (seat with attached mechanism)

🔧 Step 1: Attach the Hydraulic to the Base

Take your chair’s 5-star base and insert the narrow end of the hydraulic gas lift into the center hole of the base. Make sure it’s inserted firmly and vertically straight. No tools are needed here — the hydraulic fits snugly and locks in place once pressure is applied later.

🧱 Step 2: Cover the Hydraulic with the Tower Belly

Now slide the plastic or metal tower cover over the hydraulic. This sleeve hides the gas lift, giving your chair a clean and finished look while also protecting the hydraulic mechanism from dust and damage.

🪑 Step 3: Place the Chair Seat on Top

Finally, carefully lift and position the chair seat (with the mechanism facing downward) onto the top of the hydraulic. Align the central hole of the mechanism directly over the hydraulic cylinder. Gently press down. Once you sit on the chair, your weight will naturally lock everything into place.

🎉 Done in Minutes!

That’s it — your chair is now ready to use! The hydraulic system allows for smooth height adjustment and rotating motion. Give it a quick test by sitting down, adjusting the height, and swiveling side to side.

👨🔧 Pro Tips from Medallion Furnitures

  • Always assemble your chair on a flat surface to avoid instability.
  • Avoid hammering or forcing any parts — all components are designed for a smooth, tool-free fit.
  • If your hydraulic doesn’t go in easily, check if there’s dust or packing debris blocking the socket.
